The most mystical of all Arabic texts, the Rubaiyat is a poem in ottava rima that takes its name from its opening words: 'La ilaha ill-Allah,' or 'There is no god but Allah.' A Sufi poem, it was completed by Omar Khayyam in the 11th century. Here are 13 of my favorite translations of selected quatrains. A book of verse underneath the bough, A jug of wine, a loaf of bread -- and thou Beside me singing in the wilderness -- O, wilderness were Paradise enow! Take this kiss upon the brow! Ah, my Beloved, let us be waryOf lips that are dry and parched; For their ale is a deadly poisonWherewith many have perished. — N. J. Dawood "The Rubaiyat of the Amir Khusro"(1834) is an English translation by William Jones (1763-1855) based on Omar Khayyam's Persian work. It includes the original text in Darakhshan(Persian), as well as Jones' own notes and commentary. It was first published 1834, by Robert Orme, Fleet Street; and has appeared in numerous subsequent editions (among them, one edition bound in leather). The complete text can be found at Project Gutenberg. The Ruba'iyat of Omar Khayyám, translated by Edward Fitzgerald (1809-1883), first published 1859, is another famous English edition. It had numerous reprints and also inspired many new translations into other languages (see e.g. the French or German editions of Khayyám). A new edition edited by Alan Jones was published in 1990 by George Allen & Unwin of London; it included an introduction by Peter Avery and a bibliography compiled by R. J. C. Broadhurst. With the permission of the University of Texas Press, I obtained a copy on 14 August 2003 on CDROM ; here is my transcription on this web page on 21 April 2004 . Translations of the Ruba'iyat are available by various translators in Persian, Urdu, Hindi, Sindhi, Punjabi, Gujarati.. The Rubaiyat by Omar Khayyam was translated into Finnish in 1878. This translation was written by Christian Magnus Flemming (1817-1892).The Ruba'iyat of Omar Khayyam also known as The Garden of the Holy Pious was written in Urdu by Makhdoom Muhsin ibn Hammad al-Ghaznawi. This edition contains an English introduction and notes on the author and different readings of the text. 8eeb4e9f32 37
